Historical Information
Rapunzel was originally written by the Grimm brothers in 1812, first being published as part of Children's and Household Tales. But the story has been traced back to hundreds of years before, to similar stories in Italy and France. The first version was by Giambattista Basile's Pentamerone in 1637. Then nearly 60 years later, Charlotte Rose published her own version of the story, with direct ties to Giambattista stories. The Grimm brothers originally wrote Rapunzel knowing about the other stories, but the differences between the two did not effect it. Their intentions were to scare children out of thievery, which ended up working until they redid the story.
